Description:
Phillip Kingsley’s range of hair and scalp products are among the most sought after in the world and are a favourite among several big name celebrities including John Travolta, Kate Winslet, Renee Zellweger and Lucy Liu. Now South Africans will be able to experience the incredible benefits of his products for the first time when the range launches in Woolworth’s Hair Zone in April this year.

Kingsley, – better known as the ‘Hair Doctor’ – and the man who coined the phrase ‘bad hair day’ is widely recognised as the world’s leading expert in the field of trichology, that is, the study and treatment of hair and its diseases.

His interest in hair started while working at his uncle’s hair salon. After qualifying as a trichologist he recognised the need for a dedicated clinical atmosphere for those suffering from hair and scalp problems.

According to Kingsley there is no doubt that hair loss, hair fall and hair thinning are a major source of anxiety. ‘The effect on the quality of life is so far-reaching, the psychological impact so sadly underestimated, the myths so diverse and the management often so complicated,’ he says. Furthermore it is often dismissed by doctors as being unimportant and not life-threatening but simply an issue of cosmetics and vanity yet he has says he has seen young women disturbed, agitated and verging on suicide after being told to ‘pull yourself together – you can always wear a wig’ by uncaring doctors.

He opened his first clinic in London in 1960 but such was the demand that he quickly outgrew his initial rented consulting rooms and in 1968 he opened his clinic at 54 Green Street, where it remains today. His second clinic opened in Manhattan, New York City in 1977 and Kingsley now commutes between London and New York in order to consult with his clients and to meet with his product development team, who are based at his Manhattan Clinic.

Products
In 1997, Kingsley launched his range of trichological products, which were based on hair textures (ie fine textured, limp or thinning hair; medium textured or wavy hair and course textured, curly or frizzy hair) and scalp conditions (ie flaky, itchy scalps and sensitive scalps or those requiring special care) rather than the convention of normal, dry or oily.

‘Over 20 years ago, when I first started selling some of the products I make in my clinics, in Saks, 5th Avenue, New York, we sold out on the first day because the descriptions on the packaging – for the first time ever – said what hair type they were for. Since then, more accurate hair product descriptions, stating what they are for and what they are expected to do, are becoming more common. All fine, straight or limp hair, for example, needs “body building” or “volumising”. Products for curly or frizzy hair are labelled as such and read “remoisturising” or “moisturising”,’ says Kingsley in his book The Hair Bible.

Today Kingsley’s products have acquired an almost cult status and are regularly singled out as top performers
