| Agricultural Extension Agent JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: EXTENSION AGENT, ESSENTIAL OILS PROJECT LOCATION: MELMOTH AREA, KWAZULU NATAL _____________________________________________________________________ Non-profit organization starting 2-year project to develop the production and processing of essential oils amongst traditional farmers in Kwa-Zulu Natal Province seeks agricultural extension agent. This is a challenging but rewarding opportunity. Major Duties and Responsibilities Key to the establishment and the development of farms for rose geranium and possibly other essential oil crops production, the extension agent reports directly to the Project Director. Major tasks will include: • Working closely with other project staff to organize traditional farmers to produce rose geranium in the most efficient and effective manner possible; • Training of traditional farmers in appropriate rose geranium production practices; • Monitoring the production of rose geranium by traditional farmers to ensure that skills communicated during training are properly applied; • Addressing production-related problems with low-cost solutions; and, • Collection of production-related data. • Writing of training manuals and farmer to farmer facilitation. • Other tasks as assigned The extension agent will also participate in producer group identification and collaborate with other project staff members to improve producer group organization and complete other tasks as assigned by the Project Director. Position Requirements 1. Education: A technical school diploma in agriculture or horticulture. 2. Work Experience: Minimum three years practical experience in farming or in the production of rose geranium or other essential oil or natural product crops. 3. Computer literacy, including Word and Excel. 4. Good interpersonal and oral and written communication skills in Zulu and English a must. 5. A valid driver’s license qualifying the holder to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles mandatory. Do not apply without a license to drive and experience driving. Monthly salary will be approximately 5,000-6,000 ZAR depending on experience.
