About the Position: Online Study Advisor

Advising is done at our offices in Bryanston, Sandton.

Online Study Advisors play an important part in ensuring that students reach their language learning goals. They contact the students on a regular basis and discuss their online study progress.

They help students to become familiar with the course website, and answer any questions that students may have. One could consider the Advisors to be "study coaches", keeping the students geared towards mastering the English language.

For your interest, here are some FAQ’s we receive:
Is it necessary to have previous experience or training in teaching?
We offer training on how to use our virtual classroom. The class is a conversation class, so the focus is on conversation. Background in teaching, in any setting, would be beneficial, but is not vital. However, English skills must be up to standard for international teaching, therefore spelling and grammar must be above average.

Are the classes loosely structured, or is there a set plan that the teacher is expected to follow?
Our conversation classes are created and designed to form part of an extensive online English course that the students work through. The full course currently consists of 14 classic levels, spanning pre-beginner all the way to advanced speakers. The conversation classes are live and begin on the hour, every hour. The topic or subject for the day is predetermined and the slides are fully comprehensive with teacher notes.

To ensure quality standards throughout all classes, course material has been compiled in conjunction with notable Universities and institutions, so you can rest assured that you will be well-equipped to help students improve their speaking skills.

Is there a support network for teachers, or are they expected to plan their classes unassisted?
The development team also sets up a collection of ‘teacher notes’ that aid the teacher when deciding how to approach the daily topic. When a teacher arrives for a shift, we ask that you read through the notes and familiarise yourself with the slides. Other than that, there is no preparation needed. All you need to do is follow the conversation topic that is given to you on any particular day.

What is the pay rate for teaching English with English First?
25 - 37 ZAR. This amount is dependent on individual performance as per student surveys.

Who is EF?
English First is the world’s largest private language educational company. Founded in 1965, the Company specializes in English education and operates over 400 schools in more than 50 countries. We have 23,000 teachers and 4000 staff worldwide. EF English First was named the Official Language Training Services Supplier of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Visit the website to learn more!

Important notes:
As someone who will be advising international students (often respected professionals in their field), it is vital that you have a clear English accent.

It is imperative that you are able to spell and manipulate grammar correctly and efficiently.

Working online (as opposed to face-to-face), it’s important that you are attentive to how you communicate with your students. You won’t be able to rely on body language, so the students will need to ‘hear’ your smile!

The primary tool of your teachings will be a windows based computer, so typing and an understanding of basic computer navigation will be vital.

As an employee of EF, you will need to demonstrate a commitment to education and customer service, upholding the EF mission and Core Values. Our mission: Enrich the lives of our customers by offering them a fundamentally better way to learn English!

Reasons to join the team:
Network with students from many nationalities and backgrounds
Full or part-time schedule to suit your availability
Flexible hours (Teach 24 hours a day!)
