Contract R&D Manager Contract R&D Manager Introduction: My client based in Pretoria with local and international ties in the defence environment has a position available for a Contract R&D Manager. You will be responsible for constructing and managing contract R&D that will deliver strategic value to the market and society in line with the company’s mandate. About the Job: You will be accountable for drawing up major strategic research programmes of a minimum of three-year duration and possibly involving multiple stakeholders. Your primary role is to provide overall leadership to the group to ensure that the required interface with major stakeholders and clients is in place to deploy competence effectively in meeting selected market needs. In addition, and in partnership with Managers and Leadership, you will ensure that group objectives are achieved in conjunction with the needs of the external market. You will ensure that adequate strategic marketing and stakeholder relationships are established and serviced in the group. Responsibilities: Leadership • Together with Managers, contribute to the group research strategy; • Together with Managers, provide inputs into strategic leadership within the group and at group level. Management • Plan and manage major research programmes that may be market- or society oriented within the defence-related industry; • Ensure Contract R&D Leaders fulfil their duties in a professional and competent manner, by: • Effective planning and management of scientists and engineers' inputs on research projects • Ensure that projects are delivered to client satisfaction and with the necessary attention to quality and science content; • Deliver input on performance management within group areas; • Plan and monitor client and stakeholder interactions within the annual plan. Business: • Business development; • Financial sustainability: ensure that programmes are adequately funded and are executed within budget; • Gather intelligence on external environment as a basis for science strategy and structure major new research programmes; • In line with the group strategy, and in conjunction with Managers and Leaders, establish and service strategic relationships with clients in order to: • Construct value propositions • Develop appropriate contract R&D opportunities • Gather market intelligence. Research and Research Investment: • Contribute to group research strategy development and implement appropriate components of research strategy; • Structure parliamentary grant investment in long-term research. Qualifications, skills and experience: • BSc or MSc qualification in a relevant science or engineering field; • Evidence of substantive training in project management and client relationship management within the defence-related industry; • A minimum of 5 years' leadership and project management experience within a defence-related industry; • 5-10 years' experience of organisational processes within an R&D environment; • Ability to interact with a network of senior stakeholders and clients; • Registration as a professional scientist or engineer; • Experience in financial and business mechanisms and processes; • Insight into requirements of the application environment; • A passion for seeing research and development results implemented for maximum benefit of the nation; • Ability to assess and communicate the value of research and development results that have been absorbed and implemented by users outside the company; • Ability to build on the vision of group leaders of where science and technology may be heading, which of these future technologies will have major benefits for users and the ability to translate this into strategic research and development programmes; • Ability to solicit buy-in and support for major strategic research and development programmes from the different stakeholder communities, including research and development teams, end users, and funding agencies; • Ability to contribute significantly to the group’s overarching strategy; • Ability to operate at the market interface; • Communication and presentation skills; • South African citizenship is a pre-requisite as security clearance will be done.
